Stuart Russell was born in 1962 in Portsmouth, England. He received his BA in Physics with first class honors from Oxford University in 1982 and his doctorate in computer science from Stanford in 1986. He then joined the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley, where he is a professor of computer science, director of the Center for Intelligent Systems, and the owner of Smith-Zadeh Chair in engineering. In 1990 he was awarded the Presidential Young Investigator of the National Science Foundation, and in 1995 was cowinner computers and thought Award. He was Professor Miller of the University of California in 1996 and was appointed chairman of a chancellor in 2000. In 1998 he gave the Forsythe Memorial Lectures at Stanford University. He is a member and former member of the Executive Council of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence. He has published over 100 articles on a wide range of topics in artificial intelligence. His other books include the use of knowledge in the analogy and induction and (with Eric Wefald) Doing the right thing: Studies in bounded rationality.
Peter Norvig is currently Director of Research at Google, Inc., and was the director responsible for the basic Web search algorithms from 2002 to 2005. He is a member of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence and the Association for Computing Machinery. Previously, he was head of the Computer Science Division of NASA Ames Research Center, where he supervised the research and development of NASA in artificial intelligence and robotics, and scientific director of Junglee, where he helped develop one of the first Internet information retrieval services. He received a B. S. in Applied Mathematics from Brown University and a doctorate in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley. He received the Distinguished Alumnus award and innovation Berkeley Engineering Achievement Medal and the NASA Exceptional. He was a professor at the University of Southern California and member of the research faculty at Berkeley. His other books are programming paradigms AI: Case Studies in Common Lisp and Verbmobil: A translation system Faceto-face dialogue and UNIX intelligent assistance systems.
