It takes courage for a novel that combines ancient secret brotherhood writing, the Swiss Conseil Européen pour la Recherche NUCLEAR, conclave, mysterious ambigrams, the plot against the Vatican, a mad scientist in a wheelchair, particles of antimatter, jets that can travel 15,000 miles per hour, cunning killers, a beautiful Italian physicist and Harvard professor of religious iconology. It takes talent to that novel, nothing but ridicule. Glory to Dan Brown (Digital Fortress) to reach almost impossible. Angels and Demons is a no-holds-barred, pull-out-all-stops, breathless tangle thriller - think Katherine Neville Eight (but smart) or Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum (but easier).
Harvard symbology Robert Langdon is shocked to find proof that the legendary secret society, the Illuminati - dedicated since the time of Galileo to promoting condemn the interests of science and the blind faith of Catholicism - is alive, well, and the deadliest active. Brilliant physicist Leonardo Vetra killed, plucked out his eyes, and society in the ancient symbol branded on his chest. His latest discovery, antimatter, the most powerful and dangerous energy source known to man, has disappeared - only to be hidden somewhere beneath the Vatican on the eve of the election of the new pope. Langdon and Vittoria Vetra's daughter and colleague, begins a frantic chase through the streets, in the churches, and the Roman catacombs, the next 400 years old lair of the path of the Illuminati, to prevent burning of civilization.
Brown looks so much like a juggler writer - there's lots and lots of balls in the air in this novel, but Brown manages to throw the reader headlong into the almost surreal suspension of disbelief. Although the reader might hope for a little sarcastic humor Langdon, and slightly less bombastic philosophizing is the eternal conflict between religion and science, these are less fatal mistakes than to tease problems - readers should not bother skimming past them and immerse themselves in to have a heck of a good book. "Brain Candy", it may be, but my! It is very tasty. --Kelly Flynn
